Public Speaking Tip: Maximize Eye Contact

by Lily Iatridis on February 5, 2010

When delivering a speech, beginner speakers can be prone to look over the heads of their audience.  This can be deadly to any opportunity for a sense of interaction between the speaker and their listeners.

Instead, make eye contact with individuals throughout your audience for a few seconds at a time.  When addressing a larger group, look toward various portions of your audience during your speech as if you’re speaking to them directly.  Do not just gaze into the area ahead of you, but look toward all of the segments of your audience during the course of your speech.  This allows for greater connection, inclusion and sense of communication with the entire group of listeners.
