Public Speaking Tip for a Mind Gone Blank

by Lily Iatridis on February 5, 2010

On occasion, even the most accomplished public speaker may find themselves going blank in the middle of a speech, which can obviously be fatal to their presentation if they don’t recover quickly.  If  this should ever happen to you, first, take a drink of water to give yourself a moment or fiddle with your microphone briefly.   Take a deep breath, keep calm, and don’t let any negative self-talk interfere with your thinking.   Then if you’re still blank on your next speech point, start your next sentence with the last word of the previous sentence of your speech and and ad lib by paraphrasing for a moment or two.  Your flow of speech should jog your memory by then.
