Public Speaking Tip: Using the Language of Your Audience

Even an extremely skilled public speaker may fail to communicate effectively if the audience doesn’t understand the message.  It’s important to know your audience in order to choose the words they understand and the examples they can relate to.  For example, if your audience comes from a technical background, by all means use technical terminology.  But if your audience is a large, diversified group, be sure to adjust your language so that your message is easily understood by all.
