Public Speaking Tip: When Your Presentation Truly Begins

by Lily Iatridis on February 5, 2010

How do you define the beginning of your presentation?  Most people would answer respond that it’s the point at which a person begins to deliver a speech to a group of people.  Not so!  Your presentation begins at the first moment your audience sees you, no matter how long it is before you actually take the stage and begin your speech.  At the first moment they see you, your audience is watching you closely and getting an impression of you, so be sure that it’s a positive one.  Therefore, if you’re sitting on a panel or stage waiting for your turn to be called on to speak, don’t dream of doing the following:  yawn, check your watch, slouch, fidget, etc.  And when you get up to take the stage, be sure to walk purposefully with upright posture.
